The Queens Library is an independent, not-for-profit corporation and is not affiliated with any other library system. It is guided by a 19-member Board of Trustees appointed by either the Mayor of the City of New York or the Queens Borough President. The Mayor, the Speaker of the City Council, the Comptroller, the Public Advocate and the Borough President are ex-officio members. Thomas W. Galante, the Library Director, is responsible for the administration of the Queens Library.

Queens Library receives the majority of its operating expenses from the City of New York. In Fiscal Year 2006, total support was $107.5 million: City of New York (83 per cent); New York State (7 per cent); the United States of America (2 per cent) and the balance from contributions and other sources.

    * In Fiscal Year 2006, in-person attendance was 13.9 million people.
    * Some 495,000 people attended 24,500 free programs.
    * Staff answered 11.5 million reference and directional inquiries, a record.
    * There were 87,365 new borrowers in FY 2006, a record.
    * Queens Library has more than 6.8 million items in its collections.
    * There were 794,000 active borrowers in FY 2006.
    * Friends of the Queens Library comprise 2,000 members. Friends are instrumental in volunteering, Promoting and advocating for the Library. For information, call 718-990-8585.
    * Exhibitions in the Queens Library Gallery and the International Resource Center Gallery are popular additions To Queens’ cultural life. Recent exhibits have included From Burgh to Borough: Queens Enters the 20th Century; Space Adventures, an interactive exhibit for children on space exploration; Another Africa: Photographs by Robert Lyons.     * Queens Library received the first-ever National Award for Library Service by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington, D.C. in April 2000.
    * More than 3,000 students attended structured classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages. Thousands more used the Adult Learning Centers for self-study and English conversation practice.
