Girls Write Now
Girls Write Now
Founded in 1998, GWN provides at-risk New York City high school girls with emerging writing talent an opportunity to be custom-matched with a professional woman writer who serves as her personal mentor and writing coach, meeting with her weekly for the duration of an entire school year, and for up to four years.
Program:
- One-on-one Mentoring Sessions: At the start of the GWN school year, each participant ("mentee") is assigned to a professional woman writer ("mentor"). Each mentor/mentee pair meets weekly in person. To spur creativity and writing, activities include free book readings, plays, films, museum visits, and writing/editing sessions based on take-home exercises from workshops.
- Group Writing Workshops: GWN conducts monthly group workshops that are led by mentors on a rotating basis. Each workshop focuses on a specific writing genre or theme not routinely found in the classroom. Capitalizing on their particular field of expertise, mentors present workshops on fiction, poetry, playwriting, memoir writing, journalism, editing, and more. Themes span from social justice to race, gender, and religion. Throughout the workshop, mentees and mentors participate in a series of writing exercises, variously conducted in a solo, one-on-one, and small group format. There are also full group discussions and critiques.
- Special Events: We sponsor a college and career seminar, individual sessions with a certified guidance counselor, a selection of cultural field trips, and three annual readings of original works by our mentors and mentees. The Spring reading is held at Barnes & Noble Bookstore and accompanied by a professionally printed anthology. Mentees learn to revise their works into a polished form and to express themselves in public in a noncompetitive format.
Size:
To maintain an intimate and authentic "workshop environment" and to support each pair, GWN focuses on 35 mentors and 35 mentees per season. We serve approximately 200 additional students through Girls Life Adventure, college prep, and our reading series.
Schedule:
The 2008-2009 GWN season runs from September to June, with extended programming throughout the summer months.
Meeting Space:
Our full-time office, one-on-one pair meeting point, and monthly group workshops are located at Teachers & Writers Collaborative, 520 Eighth Avenue, on the 20th floor. Workshops and readings are hosted by our community allies at institutions around the city including Barnard College, Scholastic, CUNY Graduate Center, The New School University, and The New York Society for Ethical Culture.
Application Process:
Prospective mentors and mentees undergo a rigorous screening process to ascertain their commitment and suitability for the program, including an interview, background check, and a writing sample.
