Headmaster's Message
This personal relationship is the foundation of the A-S community, and it matters most in providing an excellent educational experience.
There are many ways to be a boy. An Allen-Stevenson education helps to foster a boy's natural intellectual curiosity about the world, about himself, and about the various communities of which he is a part. Here joy and delight in learning are matched by the values of hard work, self-discipline, integrity, and good sportsmanship. Just as we honor great teaching, we respect our students as creative, precious individuals within a larger whole. This attitude builds their self-confidence, their love of learning, and their respect for others.
As you consider Allen-Stevenson, we hope that you will share our avid belief that a vigorous curriculum - that thoughtful mix of academics, athletics, and the arts - best educates the whole boy and prepares him for the future. Over time, such experiences truly inspire boys to become scholars and gentlemen.
Our Mission
Allen-Stevenson’s distinctive “enlightened traditional” approach educates boys to become scholars and gentlemen. In the belief that there are many ways to be a boy, the School offers an ongoing commitment to each student and uses the best insights and tools available to understand him as a whole person. We inspire in each boy an appreciation of responsible citizenship and a lifelong love of learning.
How We Accomplish Our Mission
Allen-Stevenson’s vigorous, pre-secondary program of academics, athletics, and the arts teaches boys to value the gratifying process by which excellence is attained. By creating a joyful, safe environment for learning, the School seeks to ensure a productive, diverse community of learners. We challenge our students to take suitable risks, learn from their mistakes, and support each other. Ultimately, we encourage boys to move through life strongly and rightly - with confidence, knowledge, enthusiasm, resilience, and respect for all.
An Allen-Stevenson Boy is a Scholar and a Gentleman.
Behavior becoming an Allen-Stevenson boy is expected at all times.
Diversity
Setting the Tone for Multicultural Diversity
The responsibility of any head of school is to lead the school community from what it is to the best that it can become. Not only must the institution fulfill its mission for students and families, but it must also be ready for future challenges and opportunities. Honoring the history, traditions and legacy of the past is important, but no school can simply perpetuate what has gone before without risking obsolescence or irrelevance. Preparing students for the future is the real educational challenge, just as the institutional challenge is to strengthen the school and bring together its various communities. This is a complex set of leadership tasks.
