Philosophy
Our teachers tailor a traditional, academically rigorous elementary education to each child's strengths and learning styles.
At ARS, children master skills through hands-on exploration. French, music, art, and physical education round out our program. Our proximity to Central Park offers a special opportunity for play and learning.
Since developing leadership and respect for others are integral to the ARS philosophy, all classes participate in community and global service projects throughout the year.
Grades K through 5, nonsectarian, coeducational, multicultural, and economically diverse.
The Mission of the Alexander Robertson School is:
- To instill love of learning
- To prepare our students to become thoughtful, successful learners, leaders, and problem solvers
- To instill ethical and moral principals which are modeled, encouraged, and practiced daily within the school community leading to responsible, sensitive interactions with others.
The School will satisfy its mission by:
- Providing structure in the daily schedule and in the curricula
- Providing sufficient intellectual challenge through robust curricula
- Stressing high standards in all activities while using developmentally appropriate practice
- Promoting the self-confidence that comes from mastered skills
- Utilizing the cultural resources available in New York City
- Encouraging and involving the students in opportunities for service
Our Educational Approach
Parents describe The Alexander Robertson School as "intensive but not intense," a school that inspires "performance without pressure." They say that their children are "relaxed, smiling, engaged and productive." Our goal is mastery of academic skills and delight in learning content. Our classes are small, our approach is structured, and our methods are eclectic, thoughtfully integrating the best of traditional and contemporary educational practices. Our students earn places in the best secondary schools in New York and are known for being well-prepared, positive additions to each community.
Open Houses
The best way to learn whether The Alexander Robertson School is right for your child is to visit.
Open Houses: 1 Open House in May and 2 Open Houses in October.
The Alexander Robertson School uses a comprehensive language arts model that teaches students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to become effective, literate communicators.
Our four block multi-method consisting of self-selected reading, guided reading, working with words, and writing, allows teachers to instruct each child in a far more engaging manner than traditional instruction alone. Each class spends two to two-and-a-half hours each day on literacy, which integrates social studies and science reading selections into the program.
