The Cathedral School

Committed since 1949 to its mission of nurturing both the mind and spirit of children, The Cathedral School is a Nursery through Eighth Grade school featuring small classes that encourage active student participation. Our school’s size creates a small "neighborhood" in which each student is known well by many adults, and in which students receive the individual attention.

Core Values - As a community of faculty, staff and students, we will dedicate ourselves to the values of Commitment, Compassion, and Responsibility:
Commitment
We will commit ourselves to the hard, serious work of learning. We will face challenges knowing that friends and teachers are here to assist us, but will also accept that we may not always at first succeed in what we attempt. We understand that our Commitment to learning means that we will do all that we can to support the learning of others in our community, so that all may develop strength and confidence as we strive together.
Compassion
We will be compassionate in our interactions with adults and students in our school community, acknowledging each individual’s need for support, understanding, respect, and kindness. By monitoring our words and actions we will preserve the dignity of each person, creating a community in which it is safe to learn, safe to be different, and safe to grow.
Responsibility
We will accept the responsibility of using the gift of education wisely, acknowledging that our opportunity to learn is a privilege that merits our best efforts to grow in mind and spirit. We will take responsibility for our choices as members of this community, acknowledging our mistakes when we err, and doing our best to mend that which we have broken.
History
Founded in 1949, The Cathedral School finds its roots in an afternoon “Greek School” program established by the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in the 1930's to serve Greek immigrants who sought to nurture in their children anappreciation of Greek language, culture, and history. In 1949, this aspiration found expression in the creation of a day school dedicated to the same ideals as it simultaneously equipped students with the academic skills essential to success in New York City’s finest schools.
Today, The Cathedral School is a nonprofit, co-educational, independent school serving New York families from a variety of backgrounds in grades Nursery through Grade 8. In the 21st Century, however, the school continues to understand its mission in terms of the ancient Greek tradition of paideia, which conceived of education as character formation, the nurturing responsible citizens, and the pursuit of excellence in all its forms.
