The Joyce Theater Foundation
The  Mission of our company
The mission of The Joyce Theater Foundation is to serve and support the art of dance and choreography, promote the richness and variety of the art form in its fullest expression, and enhance the public interest in, and appreciation of, dance and the allied arts of music, design, and theater.
Our history
Since its inception, The Joyce has welcomed over 270 New York City-based, national and international dance companies to its stage. It would be difficult to imagine the dance world today without The Joyce Theater. In addition, The Joyce now oversees Joyce SoHo, a dance center in Lower Manhattan that is beautifully equipped with two dance studios for rehearsals and performances.
Whether you are new to dance or are a Joyce Member with a deep appreciation for it, The Joyce offers a unique opportunity to get closer to the art. Experience a range of movement styles and traditions in the renowned Joyce Theater, an intimate, 472-seat venue in Chelsea; or at Joyce SoHo, a more intimate and unique dance venue in Lower Manhattan.
You may also explore dance through our series of Dance Talks and other educational programs. You'll find that each experience brings you closer to one of the world's most celebrated art forms.
With The Joyce, getting closer to dance goes beyond getting closer to the stage. In fact, you may take advantage of a variety of educational programs.
- The Joyce partners with New York City metropolitan area K-12th grade schools to create its school programs, which reach over 2,000 students and teachers.
- The Family Matinee series makes dance accessible by inviting young people between the ages of 6-14 years old to the adult table.
- We also offer opportunities for life-long learning with informative post-performance Humanities discussions, Dance Talks, and other learning opportunities as part of our adult education programs.
In addition, The Joyce partners with arts institutions, education institutes, and community and social service organizations throughout the year to bring dance to diverse audiences. Collaborators have included The New School, Bed-Sty Restoration Corporation, and The Hudson Guild. The Theater has had a strong commitment to community engagement and education since its founding in 1982.
Humanities Series
If you're seeking an even closer look at dance, The Joyce's Humanities Series offers post-performance discussions with dance company artists, including choreographers, artistic directors, designers and dancers. Humanities are typically scheduled on Wednesdays.
