In 1991, Dr. Sprague started his own practice in Batavia. Dr. Sprague has seen individuals, couples, and families dealing with a wide variety of issues. He spends most of his time doing counseling, but he has also conducted various types of psychological evaluations at the request of individuals and various agencies.
Dr. Sprague's Practice
Children & Adolescents

Dr. Sprague has had extensive experience in seeing school-aged children and adolescents for counseling and testing. Depending on the situation, Dr. Sprague may see them individually or in the context of family counseling. For the initial visit, the parents are asked to come alone to give Dr. Sprague the background information needed to help him to determine the best course of treatment.
Counseling
Dr. Sprague expects and encourages you to obtain knowledge of the procedures, goals, and possible side effects of psychotherapy. He expect to make the professional contact one where you will receive the maximum benefit, and he will inform about alternatives to psychotherapy. Psychotherapy may be tremendously beneficial for some individuals while, at the same time, there are some risks. The risks may include the experience of intense and unwanted feelings, including: sadness, anger, fear, guilt, or anxiety. It is important to remember that these feelings may be natural and normal and are an important part of the therapy process. Other risks of therapy might include: recalling unpleasant life experiences, facing unpleasant thoughts and beliefs, increased awareness of feelings, values, and experiences, and alteration of your ability or desire to deal effectively with others in relationships.
The success of this joint endeavor depends in part on your sustained commitment, flexibility to experiment, and your courage to make new choices and to change. You may find that change is difficult, often accompanied by ambivalence and resistance. As the therapeutic relationship develops, attempts to work through issues might create periods of internal distress. You may experience moments of frustration, some anxiety, self-doubt, and conflict. This is what is to be expected from the normal process of effective counseling. As you experience these initial difficulties, you may decide that you are not ready for the kind of change at this time. People often arrive in counseling at different stages of readiness for change. You may end the counseling relationship at any time.
In therapy, major life decisions are sometimes made, including decisions involving separation within families, developing new relationships, changing employment settings, and changing your lifestyle. These decisions are a legitimate outcome of the therapy experience as a result of an individual’s calling into question many of his or her beliefs and values. Be assured, however, that Dr. Sprague will never challenge your religious beliefs, even though they may vary from his own. As your therapist, he will be available to discuss any of your assumptions, problems, or possible negative side effects of our work together.
